When Woody Guthrie was hospitalized with Huntington's disease, he created a company to administer his catalog and handle his business affairs. Initially, the administrators included Marjorie Guthrie, Harold Leventhal, and Pete & Toshi Seeger. Presently, Woody Guthrie Publications is administered by Woody Guthrie's daughter Nora Guthrie and granddaughter, Anna Canoni.
WOODY GUTHRIE was born on July 14th, 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma. Over the decades, his songs have run around the world like a fast train on a well-oiled track. They've become the folk song standards of the nation, known and performed in many languages throughout the world. He wrote over 3,000 songs in his lifetime. Pastures of Plenty, Pretty Boy Floyd, Tom Joad, So Long It’s Been Good To Know Yuh, I Ain’t Got No Home, Hard Travelin', Deportee, Oklahoma Hills, This Train Is Bound For Glory, Union Maid, Jesus Christ, Do Re Mi, Roll On Columbia, Vigilante Man, The Great Dust Storm, Dust Bowl Refugee and This Land Is Your Land are among the hundreds by Woody that have become staples in the canon of American music.
NORA GUTHRIE, the youngest child of Woody & Marjorie Guthrie, is the President of Woody Guthrie Publications, Inc. She served as president of the Woody Guthrie Foundation for over 30 years, founded the Woody Guthrie Archive in 1992, and co-founded the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, OK in 2013. Working with her father’s archive, Nora has given unprecedented access and visibility to his creative works through new recordings, publications, films, and exhibitions. She is the executive producer of numerous GRAMMY award winning albums, recording hundreds of her father’s previously unknown lyrics set to music by contemporary musicians.
Since Woody’s passing in 1967, Marjorie, and now Nora, have consistently reminded us that Woody’s work is enlightening, inspiring, edifying, and most importantly, current - spotlighting Woody Guthrie as a significant guiding voice and citizen of the world.
ANNA CANONI, has worked at Woody Guthrie Publications, Inc. for over two decades and has worked side-by-side with her mother Nora, on every major tribute to Woody Guthrie since the 1996 Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame Hard Travelin' tribute. Anna has worked on recent publications including; Woody Guthrie ArtWorks
, My Name Is New York
, House of Earth
, Woody Guthrie's Wardy Forty
, and Woody Guthrie Songs and Art - Words and Wisdom
. Anna worked on the 2012 centennial celebrations for Woody Guthrie; including concerts, educational symposiums, and exhibits that followed Woody's footsteps around the country and from California to the New York Island
, culminating at the Kennedy Center.
In 2021, Anna was part of the curatorial team for the Woody Guthrie People Are The Song
exhibition that opened at The Moran Library and Museum, NYC and at the Woody Guthrie Center, Tulsa, OK. Most recently Anna worked on the Dropkick Murphys 2022 and 2023 albums, This Machine Still Kills Fascists
