Nora Guthrie, Woody Guthrie's daughter, is the Director of the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives, and President of Woody Guthrie Publications, Inc. In addition to managing the project to archive and preserve the personal materials and original creative works of her father, Ms. Guthrie develops and produces artistic projects which continue to introduce the public to Woody Guthrie's vast cultural legacy.
Ms. Guthrie was executive producer of the Billy Bragg/Wilco collaborative recordings Mermaid Avenue Vol. I and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II on Elektra Records, which set music to previously unknown Guthrie lyrics. Mermaid Avenue Vol. I and Vol. II both received a Grammy nominations in 1999 and 2001 respectively. Ms. Guthrie worked with folk artist Kathy Jakobsen on the children's book This Land Is Your Land (1998) for Little, Brown and Company which illustrates and highlights Guthrie's classic lyric. The book, now in its third printing, has won numerous awards and literary praise. In 1998, Ms. Guthrie curated the first major exhibition on her father in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). This Land Is Your Land: The Life and Legacy of Woody Guthrie opened in May of 1999 at the Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage in Los Angeles and toured nationally for three years at major museums throughout the country. It presented previously unseen material including instruments, writings, artwork and song lyrics from the Woody Guthrie Archives and provided a rare and intimate glimpse into the life and legacy of this unique American artist. Nora's most recent project has been working with The Klezmatics to create new CD's of Woody's previous unreleased lyrics. Happy Joyous Hanuka, released in 2004, is a collection of eight Hanukkah songs for eight nights of Hanukkah, plus 4 instrumental tracks. Wonder Wheel, released in 2006, celebrated Woody's experiences living in Coney Island during the early 1940's and subsequently won a Grammy for Best Comtemporary World Music Album!
