Finding aid to WOODY GUTHRIE SONG LYRICS
SONGS-2

circa 1930s to circa 1950s

Song lyric sheets held by the Woody Guthrie Archives are organized into three separate series. This series, SONGS 2, is comprised of songs included in Woody Guthrie's notebooks, which may also include drawings, poems, or other notations. SONGS-1 is comprised of loose lyric sheets, which are housed in folders by alphabetical order. SONGS-3 contains lyrics found in oversize notebooks.

SONGS-2: Song texts in notebooks. Total of 1359 songs, housed in 84 notebooks.

Scope and Content: Individual song texts, typed or written down by Woody Guthrie, or composed by Woody Guthrie but transcribed by others. Some transcribed melodies by others have been retained alongside their respective lyrics, or text. Publisherıs musical songsheet mockups have been retained here if no other copy is known to exist in the archives. Authorship includes original songs by others or of unknown origin. The songs date from the mid 1930s through the mid 1950s. A song may have been assigned up to 3 ³genre² headings, although more may apply.

Arrangement Notes:

Locations listed in SONGS-2 and SONGS-3 databases provide a notebook number, followed by page number(s) in parenthesis. [e.g. 2 (21) refers to Notebook
2, page 21] Any given song title may have more than one such listing in either Notebook series. Songs listed in SONGS-2 may or may not be listed in the other two databases (SONGS-2 and SONGS-3.) While many of the song titles have been duplicated in more than one database, some titles are unique to one database.
