Finding aid to WOODY GUTHRIE SONG LYRICS
SONGS-1

circa 1930s to circa 1950s

Song lyric sheets held by the Woody Guthrie Archives are organized into three separate series. This series, SONGS-1, is comprised of loose lyric sheets, which are housed in folders by alphabetical order. SONGS-2 is comprised of songs included in Woody Guthrie's notebooks, which may also include drawings, poems, or other notations. SONGS-3, contains lyrics found in oversize notebooks.

SONGS-1: Song texts on individual sheets of paper. Total of 1327 songs, housed in 3 boxes

Scope and Content:

Individual song texts, typed or written down by Woody Guthrie, or composed by Woody Guthrie but transcribed by others. Some transcribed melodies by others have been retained alongside their respective lyrics, or text. Publisher’s musical songsheet mockups have been retained here if no other copy is known to exist in the archives. Authorship includes original songs by others or of unknown origin. The songs date from the mid 1930s through the mid 1950s. A set of song lists and song introductions by Woody Guthrie are also found separately at the end of the songs. A song may have been assigned up to 3 "genre" headings, although more may apply.

Collection restrictions:

Songs which are not copyrighted need to undergo a copyrighting process before they may be removed from the archives in photocopied form by researchers.

Arrangement Note:

Song texts are arranged alphabetically according to Woody Guthrie’s spelling. Where different titles exist for the same song, one title has been chosen, and all copies are filed together. For example, "Reno Blues" is filed under "Philadelphia Lawyer," the title being only a variation, the song texts themselves are identical. Similarly, two different song texts may have the same title. A "search" in the SONGS-1 database will help clarify the number of versions of any given song. The principal title in the databases correspond to the Woody Guthrie spelling under which the item is filed. A song may have been assigned up to 3 "genre" headings, although more may apply.

*Note:

Two exceptions to alphabetical arrangement exist. The first are a grouping in folder 21 of "Peekskill songs." These songs were originally bound together, but later disassembled. The songs originally in this "songbook" and with "Peekskill" within their title remain together. They are filed together, alphabetically under "Peekskill." Secondly, "Talkin’" and "Talking" titles are interfiled, with or without a "g" on the end.

*Note:

Songs listed in SONGS-1 may or may not be listed in the other two databases (SONGS-2 and SONGS-3.) While many of the song titles have been duplicated in more than one database, some titles are unique to one database. Therefore, when searching for a song, all three databases should be consulted.
